Travel Day - Winchester, VA

Traveling from Nashville, Tennessee, to Winchester, Virginia, via Interstates 40 and 81 offers a scenic journey through the heart of the Appalachians, blending rolling hills, dense forests, and majestic mountain vistas.

Starting eastward on I-40, travelers pass through Middle Tennessee's farmlands and climb onto the Cumberland Plateau, with increasingly hilly terrain around Cookeville and Crossville. As the route approaches Knoxville, distant glimpses of the Great Smoky Mountains emerge, especially near the exits for Sevierville and Pigeon Forge, where the hazy blue ridges of America's most visited national park dominate the horizon.

After merging onto I-81 northeast of Knoxville, the drive enters the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians, passing through Bristol on the Tennessee-Virginia line and into Southwest Virginia's rugged terrain. The highway then parallels the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east, offering sweeping views of the fertile Shenandoah Valley—with its patchwork farms, limestone cliffs, and river windings—particularly stunning around Roanoke and further north toward the Shenandoah National Park vicinity.
